Community woodlands
Information about community woodlands within the Wychwood forest.
Since its launch in 1997 the Wychwood Project has helped to establish 10 community woodlands including:
Centenary Wood, Charlbury
Dean Common, Chadlington
Digger’s Wood, Shipton under Wychwood
Eynsham Wood, Eynsham
William Fowler Memorial Wood, Chipping Norton
Leafield Community Wood
North Leigh Common
Breach Wood, Hailey
Little Garden Wood, Ramsden
The Project is also working on a new community woodland site near Witney. In addition, there are several woods in the Project area in private ownership where owners generously allow access to local residents.
Community Woods provide for pleasure, learning, wildlife, health – and also help bring communities together. In the long term, if well managed, these woods will also produce some useful timber.
The Project aims to create more local community woods, and the Friends of Wychwood, who help support the Project, have pledged £10,000 towards the creation of local community woods.
Individuals and groups have worked tirelessly to create these beautiful wooded areas for everyone to enjoy. As a result of this work, the Wychwood Project has built-up a network of experienced individuals and groups who can provide help and advice to other communities about the establishment and maintenance of these woodlands. We aim to hold an annual forum and site visit for those involved in local community woods.

"As a result of the enthusiasm of the Wychwood Project, Hailey now has its own 6.5 acre community woodland, with strong links to Hailey School. Village folk of all ages, especially children, are spending increasing time back in the countryside".
Sean Morris, Chairman, Hailey Community Woodland Ltd.
