Countryside Action Team
The aims of the group are to help with a wide range of different practical tasks that will support the work of the Wychwood Project.
Anyone is welcome to join the group whether or not you have experience of countryside volunteering. Enthusiasm and the will to enjoy yourself is just as important as knowledge and skills, which you will pick up as you join in with the Wychwood CAT.
The Wychwood CAT will meet on the first Saturday of each month to carry out conservation work around the Wychwood area. The aims of the group are to help with a wide range of different practical tasks that will support the work of the Wychwood Project. The CAT will work in areas that you might not visit otherwise and you will be able to learn practical skills in woodland and general habitat management, and to meet like minded people. Anyone with previous experience of countryside volunteering will be very welcome to share their experience with us as we develop this new group.

The Wychwood Project is involved in various conservation activities in west Oxfordshire and the Wychwood CAT has been formed to compliment these. For example 600 trees were planted by the Wychwood project at Swinford Lock in Eynsham and the Wychwood CAT helped clear grass and vegetation around these trees and so helped to ensure their continued growth.
The aim of the CAT is to:
- Meet like-minded people
- Access areas of the countryside that you might not otherwise visit
- Help support the countryside conservation aims of the Wychwood Project
- Learn new practical skills in woodland and general habitat maintenance
Tasks vary each month and may include tree planting, pruning, coppicing, and grass and scrub clearance. Tools and gloves will be provided, but any one who wishes to do so may bring their own.
People of all ages are welcome to join the CAT, but children under 16 must be accompanied by parents/carers who are responsible for their safety. No previous experience is necessary, and training may be available for those who find that they wish to become more proficient in certain areas, for example there are hedge laying and dry stone walling groups in the Wychwood Project and people will be welcome to join these after attending a training session.
So come along and be a CAT – its where its at!
