Queen's Award for Voluntary Service

Queen's Award presentation

We are extremely proud to announce that the Project was awarded the Queen's Award for Voluntary Service in 2006.

The Wychwood Project was nominated for its role in "encouraging people to understand, conserve and restore the landscape and wildlife habitats of the former Royal Forest of Wychwood".

The Lord Lieutenant of Oxfordshire, Hugo Brunner, presented the Award (a commemorative piece of engraved crystal and a certificate signed by Her Majesty) to Alan Spicer (Project Chairman) and Ken Betteridge (Friends' Chairmen) at a short ceremony held at Breach Wood Community Woodland in Hailey on the 24 June.

This Award truly recognises the many ways in which the activities of the Friends of Wychwood and other local volunteers lie at the heart of the Wychwood Project.

The Queen's Award for Voluntary Service

The Award recognises the vital role played by the hundreds of thousands of ‘unsung heroes’ of the voluntary and community world and emphasises the importance of continuing recognition of their work.

In 2002 her Majesty announced the creation of a new, annual Award to mark the occasion of her Golden Jubilee. Since then a number have been given each year to recognise "outstanding achievement by groups of people … who volunteer their own time to enhance and improve the quality of life and opportunity for individuals or other groups in the community".
