Ancient and veteran trees are a valuable part of the landscape

Veteran trees are defined as trees which, because of their great age, size or condition, are of exceptional value in the landscape, culturally, or for wildlife.

Ancient and veteran trees are a valuable part of the landscape because of their historical connections, aesthetic appeal and ecological significance, providing important habitat for a range of wildlife including insects, fungi and bats.

Britain has the largest and best collection of ancient trees in north-west Europe so their conservation is of international importance. Veteran trees are found in our native woodlands, wood pasture, historic parklands and in hedgerows. Many have already been lost and it is important for us to record those that remain so that they can be conserved for the future.
